Are you an agile visionary in project management?
If so, you are one of those who are able to have a vision without needing too much detail. You can organize with minimum knowledge. In other words, you don’t need to be an expert to have a vision of the future. You are those who are capable if the problem is important enough to take action quickly.
You must have noticed that not everyone is capable of ignoring details and make a decision. You may feel, as we all do, that your method is the best. Especially since you have noticed that the others around you seem to consider too many elements.
Breaking news! There is not just one method that works and it all depends on your preferences. This article will explain your advantages and help you identify what to be careful with your preference to become great leaders.
Personalities, Project Management Perspective
There are several types of personalities or preference in project management. This seems obvious, and yet many of us forget it. We all believe there is a way to manage the team.
This article is the last of a series of 5. The objective is to describe the concepts that explain the polarities of the personalities and briefly describe those personalities. In this article, we will explain the type: Agile Visionary.
Before we begin, it is important to point out that there is an infinite range of viewpoints and variations. The important thing is to understand what creates the polarities, the fundamental axes of your type of management. Before you start reading this article, make sure you have read the introductory article on Project Management Perspectives.
And remember, you are potentially all these points of view depending on a specific situation. It is therefore important to understand the 4 to know how to navigate and adapt according to the situation.
Are you sometimes or mainly of the Agile Visionary type?
The level of detail considered
We often have the feeling to be capable of discerning the important element. Most consider too many details, then it becomes harder to develop a vision based on a complex situation. Our level of expertise is sufficient to make decisions. We tend to say that the small imperceptible details are not necessary to be considered in our plan.
The Method of Organization of the Agile Visionary
The objective is clear, but the specify step to get there are not. It’s not important to know the path to get there because we trust, we’ll get there. We have an attitude rather flexible to plans, organization. Moreover, it is mostly likely not us who created the detailed plan if one exists for the project.
We trust our instinct and our general knowledge. We are not experts in the domain. Our instinct guides us on our journey to meet the goal and address challenges. Having a goal and using our instinct is, in fact, enough as the plan.
Discussed details to create plans, we do not see too much interest, because anyway we know that we shall face the problem the day they come. We will know what to do at the right time and we will solve the problem when we get there, if there is one.
Very often it is our colleagues who see problems in advance. We often have the impression that they might see problems where there is nothing. The reality is, because we are not experts, it is highly likely that we have “blind spot” on the topic.
Agile Visionary Response Speed
Another aspect that characterizes us is that if we do not perceive the logic presented, there is a good chance that we will not react. However, if we understand, we will take action immediately and change everything if necessary. We are ready to change everything, regardless of the impact on the activities under way. We are agile and proud of it.
Why wait to change the plans when we know it’s not the priority? We often go from big emergencies to big emergencies, and that’s fine. We can move from one state or objective to another quickly without warning.
Advantage of Being an Agile Visionary
We love it when we have to go fast. Why wait to finish a step before changing direction. Wait! why when the right time to act is now. When time is critical, we are at your best. At the same time, we like to be relaxed, it is not a detail that will make us move. So here are our advantages:
We are able to articulate a vision, a goal is our way of making plans.
quick to move and intervene when it’s highly important
Relatively stable in the sense that small details do not influence us too much. As a result, our long-term vision will last which helps align teams.
Agile, we adjust to the important elements that affect our projects.
Need to be careful with:
Be good with emergencies has its side effects
Given that the plan or processes are of lesser importance, it is very possible that we are not following exactly what the group has decided. Therefore, it is very possible over a long period of time that we will induce irritation to our colleague.
For example, we don’t take time to file the form to introduce a new project, become it was another urgency. Or we have a new idea for a project and we introduce it without going through the committee that prioritizes them. No time to lose, this idea is great and will solve our problems.
For us, no worries we are excellent at managing emergencies on demand, so not following procedure is not a problem as we always adjust. For others, however, this state of emergency drain their energy and adds chaos to the system.
The Side Effect of Pivoting while we are progressing a task.
Since we have a tendency not to complete the steps in progress and pivot quickly, we need to be aware of the side effects.
Increases the risk of not completing them later and then create another emergency afterwards.
Increases the chances of disengaging the team.
As a leader, this quick change approach without completing the steps can give our teams the impression that the work they do is never useful. It may affect engagement. When changes happen without completing the task, they learn that it is possible not to follow through on responsibilities, as there is going to have a high chance their responsibilities to be changed. They might think: the plan will change before the end, why should I bother do a good job. Why should we follow the plan when the leader itself is not following it?
The Side Effect of Pivoting Quickly
Since we are able to pivot quickly, it is possible that we have changed course in our minds, but forgot to communicate it to others. The need of the change is so obvious, we don’t even notice we changed the plan.
In the short term, our colleagues will adjust. However, in the long term, they will probably start to think that we do what we want and that we aren’t a team player.
Another side effect is that our team will often feel they are wasting their time, as they worked on something not important as the plan changed. They will probably feel we are not including them in the decisions as well and this could provoke disengagement.
The solution, we have to make sure the team follows the story, and if the story is changed we have to inform them and ideally allow them to influence the next part of the story as well.
Perception of Others on Our Agile Visionary Methods
If poorly manage, our tendency of not taking into account details and communicate our change in mind to other will lead to negative judgments.
Some of our colleagues will have a hard time to understand why a detail that’s important to us makes us move quickly when a detail that’s important to them often doesn’t make us react. Our colleagues will tend to think of us as self-centred. We therefore give the signal to be egocentric and little influenced by others, even if it’s not the case.
If we manage our side effects well, we will be great to inspire and mobilize team.
A first tip for agile visionaries
It is important to realize that making a plan is the ultimate tool for aligning a group of people, not only objectives have to be put in place. Creating a plan is also excellent for our collective memory. Plans are perfect for coordinating a team. It can be changed regularly, but it must be communicated, as explain above.
You will be surprised to see how well the teams are able to follow if the members are well informed. Share the reasons for the change and not assume everyone can read your minds.
Interaction Between Personality Types
We all need to be careful not to think that everyone is like us, and that we have the only good way to work. We must not impose our style on others. All methods have pros and cons.
For people who are naturally on the opposite side of us, they don’t understand us very well. From their point of view, it is much more effective to step back and plan to avoid forgetting things and creating other emergencies afterwards.
It’s all about the angle and points of view. Let’s take the time to listen to others in their different way. Time is the key, slow down and listen.
Let’s start by observing our preference relative to the two main axes of time management and project.
The level of detail axis
The axis of the change-of-state speed
If we keep them in mind and have an important conversation with a member of our team, it will help us to adjust and open to options.
Yes, they might see something we don’t!
And yes, it would their point of view will help us make a better decision!
How about we play a little bit with the speed and the level of detail to make sure the majority of our team are okay to follow at their best.

Remember we can all be the 4 types depending on the group we are in. Our personality in project management is always relative to the group and the situation. Observe the personality of others and adapt.
If you have a personality that seems more prominent, that’s not a problem either! It may even be an advantage you can specialize in what makes our colour, your “Spike.”
